Annaleah’s Doctor’s Appointment

Ok.. lets see.. we left here at 9am to head to Hartford.. I packed her back pack with diapers and extra clothes, I little bag with ice for her milk/juices, and then a big bag full of things to do (stickers, crayons, paper, books, little people, popsicle sticks, etc.)  Angel took everything to the car.. We get there.. and the bag of toys are not in the car!!  All I kept thinking about is what is this poor child going to do for 3.5 hours..

Annaleah had her hearing test done first.. it was too cute.. First they checked her ears.. there is pressure build up in the left ear and fluid in the right ear.  The tubes are also sitting in the ear canal.. ready to fall out after a year.  When they tested her.. she sat in my lap.. they had these speakers.. on to the right and to the left.. on the way.  On top of the speakers where these stuffed musical bears.. so everytime she heard a sound.. she would turn to the direction of the speaker.. and the musical bears would beat their drum.  It was so funny watching her look back and forth.. she though it was funny.. Then she wore the headphones and followed directions on touching her eyes, nose, hair, etc.. She did very well, behavior wise.. The test showed a slight hearing loss but they believe it is from the fluids.. We are supposed to go back in two months for another one.

While I was there.. she asked if I would like to get a quick test on me.. that would tell me if it is sensory or nerve damage that I have.. Well the test showed I have a severe hearing loss (knew that part already.. lol ) and that it is nerve damage.. which can be hereditary.. So now she wants to do a test on Annaleah every year.. just to keep a close eye on her..

Then we went to the craniofacial team.. Here are the results..

1. Dentist wants Annaleah to see the dentist as soon as possible.. she believes in dental care by the age of one.. What will be tough is finding a dentist in our local area that believes the same thing.

2. The doctor who did the surgery.. said the palate looks great.. however, we won’t know how successful it was until she says all her sounds. He believes that Annaleah should be in Birth to Three til she is three ..and then moved to a school program for the speech.. He also  said to speak to Kelly (the speech pathologist) about it.. and find out her recommendation.

3.  Kelly said Annaleah sounded wonderful.. but she noticed she was not saying certain sounds .. and told me to get birth to three to keep her in the program for at least another 6 months.

4. The Ear, Nose and Throat doctor.. wants to see her in 2 months.. if the fluid goes away on it own than great.. if not then he wants to put new tubes in..

So that was it.. Annaleah was wonderful..did everything that was asked.. she is such a big girl.  Where did my baby go??

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers!

Let me tell you about yesterday.  Because of Annaleah’s cleft palate at birth, she was immediately eligible for Birth to Three.  A child developement specialist has been coming to our home once a month since her birth.  Well, developementally she has never had a problem.. so things were great.  I enjoyed the company for that one hour every month and Julie enjoyed seeing Annaleah.

After surgery, the issue became focused on the speech part of Anna’s developement.  I was told that Anna would need help in this area.. and that she had to be monitored consistantly for the next few years as new sounds were being formed every day.  So the Speech Pathologist at the children’s hospital recommended a Birth to Three speech pathologist come into the home once a month.  However due to Anna’s age at the time (9 months) Sue wanted to wait until around 16 months or when Annaleah became more vocal.. so she has been coming since November.

Annaleah is doing wonderful so far.. all her beginning sounds are great and Sue has given me suggestions on helping her prepare for new sounds and such.  So we have been praticing things like blowing whistles, drinking thick shakes from straws, encouraging specific sounds, etc.

It has been 1 year since surgery, I was informed that Annaleah would need to be re-evaluated before it was known whether or not she could stay in the program.. Sue came yesterday.. because we really wanted Anna to be in the program, Sue was going to be a little tough on the test.. if Anna didn’t get it exactly right..she wasn’t giving her credit.. Well, a score for Anna’s age is 40 .. Anna scored between 58 – 68 on each area!!  So now I am happy and sad.. Ugh..

So now I am worried.. I heard of cases where a cleft child was doing great..the parents pulled the child out of the program because they saw no need for it.. a year later the child has a major speech impairment that needs to be corrected.. but once you leave the program.. it is so much harder to get back in.. So now what do we do..

Well, Julie has permission to try to bend those scores a bit.. but that is an awful lot of bending.. Then we were thinking of maybe doing a speech eval. only.. so she is going to speak with Sue and see what they can do.. I am going to talk to the Speech Pathologist at the hospital.. maybe she can do something. (she is the one that insisted on the program in the beginning.).. So we will see..

I must apologize.. someone asked how I was doing with the eating plans.  I am doing ok.. still needs work though.  I did lose 6 pounds in 2 weeks.. great!  But then I seemed to have stopped there.  I have also stopped making changes.. I really have to get back on track..

Anna is growing way too fast.  She had a ball with Mimi here the last two weeks.

Now she just walks around saying “Mimi?”..  She is repeating everything lately.

Now is the time to watch what we say.. you know,

all those “not so nice” words.. like “stupid” and “shut up”..

I am going to have to stay on top of David.

Here are a few pics that I wanted to share

Here is Annaleah getting a haircut.  I had decided to cut her bangs.

Her hair is not think enough for barrettes yet and it is always in her face..

we decided to make the drastic cut.. layers..
